Tarpon are here in abundance all year around and bonefish and permit join them in the warmer summer months. From October to April there is a risk of cold fronts coming in from the north with strong winds, when the port will be shut for commercial fishing boats, however we will still be able to fish in the protected waters of the Ría. Indeed, the cold fronts stimulate the prawns to swarm upon which the tarpon feed voraciously and without their usual caution. The fishing can be spectacular at this time, with both anglers on the boat hooking up at the same time.
The local fishery is protected as a marine reserve, preventing commercial fishermen from targeting the lagoons. With low-fishing pressure, as there are only seven guides working between San Felipe and Río Lagartos, the ecosystem thrives, supporting an exceptional fishery. When you go out to fish it is likely that you will be the only people fishing for miles around.
Although the focus is on baby tarpon there are other species worth chasing particularly by casting or spinning.
Fishing is done from one of three of Pedro's pangas, 18 or 23 ft, spacious for two anglers, with new four stroke motors.
